Your training progresses from the fundamentals of professional ambulance driving through to advanced and emergency response driving, allowing you to build confidence and competence progressively throughout the programme.
Assessment
Assessment takes place throughout the programme and includes:
- 3 knowledge assessments
- FutureQuals Learner Work Product
- Practical driving assessments and continuous instructor assessment
- Final Independent Driving Assessment
- Structured self-directed learning and reflective practice
- Mandatory pre-course study
Each week builds your driving capability in realistic stages — from mastering road craft to operating under blue lights in urban, rural, and motorway environments.

Foundations & Routine Driving
Road traffic law, vehicle preparation, observation, system of car control, manoeuvring and routine driving.
Advanced Driving Skills
Rural roads, motorways, cornering, overtaking, vehicle dynamics, navigation and progressive driving.
Emergency Response Driving
Legal exemptions, emergency warning equipment, urban and rural response driving, decision-making and human factors.
Assessment & Consolidation
Night driving, knowledge assessments, practical assessments, reflective learning and Final Independent Driving Assessment.
Learners progress from core driving principles and routine driving through to driving at speed, emergency response driving and, ultimately, independent emergency response driving.

🔒 Entry Requirements
To enrol on this programme learners must:
- Be aged 18 years or over on the first day of the course.
- Hold a full, valid UK driving licence appropriate for the vehicle category.
- Have a contract with an NHS Ambulance Service or a CQC-registered ambulance provider contracted to provide emergency ambulance services on behalf of an NHS Ambulance Service.
- Meet the eligibility requirements for the FutureQuals Level 3 CERAD Pathway 2 qualification.
- All learners are subject to an eligibility check before registration onto the FutureQuals qualification.
