Safe Administration of Lifesaving Medication (SALMs) – Level 3

This regulated and nationally recognised qualification is designed for those working in Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered organisations (or equivalent) who are required to safely administer and monitor the effects of lifesaving medication as part of their role.

This one-day course provides essential training for prehospital care providers and others operating under appropriate clinical governance, equipping them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to safely deliver medication in time-critical situations.

Throughout the course, learners will explore:

  • Common lifesaving medications

  • The effects and side effects of medication

  • How to assess patient needs and monitor for response or adverse effects

  • The principles of safe drug administration within their clinical role

On completion, learners will be equipped to administer lifesaving medication safely and appropriately within the scope of their operational role and organisational policies.

Learners will cover key areas including:

  • Legislation, guidelines, policies and protocols relevant to medication administration

  • Safe administration techniques for lifesaving medication

    • Common medications used in prehospital care
    • Intended effects and potential side effects
    • Common adverse reactions
  • Types of lifesaving medication, including:

    • Adrenaline 1:1000
    • Aspirin
    • Glucogel
    • Ipratropium bromide
    • Naloxone hydrochloride (Narcan)
    • Salbutamol

  • Taking and interpreting physiological measurements before and after medication delivery

  • Drug administration routes, including oral, IV, IM, SC and others

  • Determining a patient’s condition to guide appropriate medication choice

  • Practical demonstrations of safe administration in simulated scenarios

  • Monitoring and reviewing patient response post-administration

Entry Requirements

To attend this course, learners must:

  • Be 18 years or older on the first day of training

  • Be employed by a CQC-registered organisation (or an overseas equivalent)

  • Have successfully completed the QA Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (FREC4) or a QA-recognised equivalent
